Free Computer Protection
Some of the best software is free and it makes no sense to spend good money on software that does not perform as well as free computer protection software. I used AVG basic free antivirus software on my home computer for years because it out performed McAfee and Norton. McAfee antivirus was a product that I became familiar with years ago in business, but AVG is faster and uses fewer resources so my computers never slowed down during scans. I have also been using Norton products for many years and would faithfully buy all their new products as they came out until I discovered AVG and found it was better optimized for performance than McAfee and Norton. However recently I have switched to Avira and Avast because of their better reviews. They both have excellent free versions that are also optimized and seem to outperform AVG, which I did not think was possible. I have settled on Avira because it seems to out rank them all in every review and it has discovered things on my computer that AVG missed.
Another great product that I have faithfully used for years is ZoneAlarm free basic. It will stop and notify you of any outbound attempts made when revised or modified software try to make contact through your network connection. I became very concerned years ago when Microsoft finally released a built-in firewall product that only stopped inbound problems and not outbound. The security community, at that time, suggested that you use additional firewall that will block both inbound and outbound. This protects you in case you get infected and the malware attempts to steal and send your personal information home. There are many other good free firewall products, but ZoneAlarm seems to still do a very good job for me.
I have grown to love Open Source and free computer protection software and I am still amazes at what you can find on the Internet.
