Hardware - Lesson 1 part 1
Learning Objectives
- Learn the computer needs both hardware and software to work.
- Learn about the many different hardware components inside and out side the computer case.
Hardware is the physical portion of a computer. What we can see and touch.
Software is instructions used to manipulate the hardware, such as, Firefox, Word, or other applications.
All operations and data are based on binary values (base 2 number system). Binary numbers consist of two digits: 0 and 1.
Bits are either a 0 or 1 and a byte is eight 0s and 1s in some kind of combination.
Processing binary data.
The computer only uses 0s and 1s and all processes including, audio, video, keyboard, mouse, network, printing, etc. is all done using only 0s and 1s. It is able to run large complex programs easily because it processes billions of these 0s and 1s every second. We can form letters, sounds, video, printing, etc. by using combinations of these 0s and 1s. As the computers get faster they are able to process more of these 0s and 1s with increased complexity and improved quality of both the audio and video processes.
I/O (input and output) external to the computer case.
Ports (connections) can be cabled or wireless
Two types of cables are data (communication) and power.
Main input devices are keyboard and mouse.
Main output devices are monitor and printer.
Storage and processing occurs internal to the case. Internal devices are CPU, motherboard, memory, hard drive, DVD/CDROM, and power supply. Expansion cards (video, network, etc.) are installed on the motherboard.

Review
Hardware needs software to work.
Computer uses binary number system.
All processing and storage is internal to the case.
I/O is external to the case and through the ports (connections).
Ports can be cabled or wireless.
Activity
Binary number system:
Convert binary to decimal and decimal to binary
10101010 = 128+32+8+2 = 170
85 = 64+16+4+1 = 01010101
